The ‘portrait’ of our life seemed like a pretty picture. We lived in a lovely house, drove nice cars, owned a business, our child was in a prep school, and we took nice vacations. Dennis made sure the outside of our house always looked pristine to give people the impression that everything was equally pristine on the inside. We always matched as a couple and a family when we went anywhere to provide a false sense of unity. It’s funny; when we took actual pictures as a family, all I could see was unhappiness in our eyes and smiles. If I even mentioned to someone a little bit of what was happening behind closed doors, it was unbelievable because they saw a picture of a happy family, and those things don’t happen to happy families. Behind our fake happiness and nice things, I felt like I was in prison and was being psychologically tortured and terrorized.
