I do feel that our role as a parent is more about guiding and teaching, especially by example, more than attempting to manipulate or control. By guiding and teaching, we are encouraging the natural developments of self-confidence and self-discipline. This is important so your children can eventually become self-sufficient. Remember, the goal is to prepare them to eventually leave the nest, capable of making their own best choices and their own best decisions. I’ve always felt that it’s important to encourage creativity, to think outside the box, to leave your comfort zone. And, that there is value to teaching our children that their thoughts and actions do not need to be like everyone else or the way it’s always been. Yes, to be themselves, who they naturally are, and that it’s more than okay to be considered different. It seems to me that is where the time learning and growth comes from. Every person, and therefore, every child is going to develop at varying rates. They may possibly spend some time trying to fit in, feeling socially accepted, before finding the confidence and courage to be different. That’s where you come in. as you consistently lead by example and by encouragement, they will feel more secure and free to be themselves… who they naturally are. What a wonderful gift! As you can see, these choices are good for us at any age. Remember, it can be hard to teach this if you are not living it. There are ongoing opportunities for us to lead by example. There is no doubt that your actions will always speak louder that your words. Be as you would like them to see.
