“If you come back tomorrow, you'll be my punk”, were the first words I heard from an inmate at the United States Penitentiary Marion, Illinois. He was six foot, two inches tall and obviously spent time in the weight shack. He was disheveled, with matted hair and small pieces of cotton distributed throughout his dark hair, wore a military fatigue jacket, and jump boots. The boot laces were untied, with the tongue overlapping the laces. As an officer in the United States Army on Academic Delay, I had seen and worn a similar uniform, but surprised to see parts of military garb worn in the fashion he was wearing them. Further, I was not accustomed to a greeting like the one which started our conversation.

About the Book
This book described the experiences of a psychology intern and subsequent psychologist in a maximum-security federal penitentiary. It discussed experiences with those who were incarcerated, staff, as well as a physical description of the edifice where these events occurred. Experiences included a hostage situation, assaults, riots, attempted prison escapes, and a contract placed on the author. It described life in a prison which served as the maximum-security facility between the years of Alcatraz and the Supermax Penitentiary in Florence, Colorado.
