The Town Square People in the town square sit on hard benches Feeling the warm noon day sun on their faces Some reading papers, some dozing the hours away A few eating, some toss crumbs to the birdy fray A loving couple walk through the square hand in hand Passing a stooping tramp, a homeless man of the land A little girl plays with a small brown shaggy puppy Her mum watches her as she applies some lippy The town square is showing its age in places Decades of footsteps wearing down the pavers The flower beds appear so past their best The grass needs a reseed and a bit of a rest Yet the generations still come to the town square Worn pavers and all for them It’s like home there

When I look across the arc of my life, I love That the peaks they mean so much That the valleys came to define me That the stars will twinkle on when I am gone In a debut collection, Mark Taylor shares poems penned in his past with the hope of inspiring others to believe in a happier tomorrow. Taylor lyrically explores diverse themes that include family, love, and life itself taking the reader to a sandy beach where a photographer shouts commands to his sun-kissed subject, an alley where a few crouch for coins and others sell mags off tatty loins, a simple song that transports a man to happier times, a weeping willow tree that holds youthful memories, and a moment of surprise, love, warmth, and beauty when a mum and son become one. Human Lives in Rhyme is a volume of poetry that reflects on one man’s experiences and the world around him with the intent of providing hope to all that better days are ahead.
About the Author
Mark Taylor was born in Zambia, Africa, and grew up in New Zealand. When he is traveling the world, he describes himself as an observant passerby. Today, Mark divides his time between New Zealand and Australia. This is his first book of poetry.
