So, on they went ‘ til evening came round Page When all of them noticed there wasn’t a sound. Not a bump or a whistle or a tweet or a beep. Why, it seemed the whole world had gone off to sleep. “It’s because we’ve climbed up so very high.” The monkey said,” I can touch the sky.” The horse remarked it was still too far. Just take a look at that twinkling star. How pretty it looks but it’s further away Than we’ll ever climb in just one day.” They continued their climb the very next morn, Not one of them minding that it was just dawn. So anxious were they to get on their way They wouldn’t waste one precious second of day. Suddenly nothing was clear and the horse cried out loud. Pa “Good gracious my friends. We’ve climbed into a cloud! We’d best stop right here as we can’t see to go. There’s a danger we might fall right off here you know. “Don’t worry about that,” said a strange voice from the fog. And, to their amazement, out stepped a large dog. “My sense of direction is perfect, you know. I’d be happy to show you which way you can go.”

About the Book
This is the first in a series of There Was a . . . books. It is a story about a monkey and a very tall tree. This tree is so tall it reaches above the earth. The monkey decides to climb this very tall tree so that he may see the whole world and be the “bravest that he can be.” On the way, he meets several characters, each with their own reasons for climbing this tree. Hostile instincts are suppressed, moral lessons are learned, and friendship binds them as they come to understand that the world is a very beautiful place from the top of this tree. They say goodbye as friends and plan to meet there at the same time each year.
About the Author
Carolyn Ruberto (nee Ebsworthy) was born in Melbourne, Australia. She credits her love of language, literature and the arts to her parents who inspired and encouraged her studies. Carolyn’s academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts (majoring in Linguistics and English), a Diploma of Education and a Graduate Diploma of Theology. Carolyn has been teaching language at St Bede’s College Mentone since 1978 and for the last twenty years has been teaching both senior and junior classes Religious Education. With her husband Joe, she has two children Anthony and Alicia. Carolyn's literary goal is to provide interesting, beautifully illustrated books to children with inspiring messages. David Biro (illustrator) was one of Victoria’s top VCE art students and has had work displayed at the National Gallery of Victoria. He is currently working in 3D imaging.
