People always tell me that the relapse "just happened" after some event such as: job loss, relationship issues, financial problems, loneliness, or arguments. The relapse process starts quite a while before picking up the drink or drug. It can start several weeks, months, or even years before. The good news is that it typically starts with changes in behavior. These changes in behavior are very similar each time for each individual. This means that your behaviors and emotions will be the same with your relapse, even if the final event that was the last straw is different. At this point you have discarded all your protective armor. The feelings are so uncomfortable that you feel powerless over them. You know that your drug of choice will relieve those uncomfortable feelings, if only for a moment.

Not everyone is ready to make changes on the same day, just like apples don’t all ripen at the same time. Developing some tools for recovery is important so that when you are ready to seriously make changes, you have the tools to start rebuilding your life.
About the Author
Diane is a RN and Certified Addictions Registered Nurse. She has 28 years experience working with people with alcohol and drug addictions. She has taught classes in 28 day in-patient rehabs, long-term treatment centers, DWI classes, and homeless shelters.
