Excerpt from book / Intro
At 33 years old, I was on seven medications, twenty pounds overweight and I was struggling to keep going on the path I was on. I was working in corporate America as a regional sales manager in the west loop of Chicago's financial district. My state of wealth was increasing, but my emotional and physical health were decreasing.
No one really knew this but me. I walked with my head held high in my Prada heels, edgy black dresses and professionally blown-out hair. Knowing I had advanced in my career to this level gave me confidence, feeling I was "successful" - at least on the outside.
I had a handsome, passionate man in my life, but he wasn't often at my side. Our relationship was tumultuous and a constant sparring match. Although we loved one another, we did not prioritize one another. He had a three-year-old child and I had a demanding career. I had a home in Milwaukee where he also lived, but I was usually either on the road with sales representatives or in Chicago, at my corporate office and west-loop corporate apartment.
When my childhood friend suddenly passed in a motorcycle accident over Memorial Day weekend in 2007, mortality struck me in the face. Realizing any day really could be my last, I made a promise that with his loss, my life would never be the same. I left my job, my boyfriend, my home and my family. I left to travel the world, seeking out something, but I wasn't really sure what. I experienced a journey to self that left me forever changed.
I travelled to South America, including Argentina, Brazil and Chile. I spent a few months in New Zealand and Australia. In Southeast Asia, I explored Vietnam, Thailand and Bali. Everywhere I went I would seek out places where I could experience or study yoga, healing, Eastern medicine, cleansing and detoxification programs. I wanted anything that could bring me healing or a greater understanding of this body-mind-spirit connection that I kept hearing so much about.
Through my travels, experience and studies, I awakened to a new way of living, a deeper sense of self, and a connection with something greater. I am still on my path, seeking, exploring, learning and sharing.
I continue to travel to Bali, Tulum, Costa Rica, Peru and more, hosting yoga retreats, mentoring or teaching trainings. My purpose now is to transform people's lives, just as I did my own, to let go of struggle and embrace one's authentic self. My advice for anyone seeking health and happiness, "Listen to your heart's desires and fall in love with your soul."
Introduction
Body, Mind, Spirit
The Chakra system is a great place to start (or continue on) your journey to understanding the self and creating a life of optimal health. Optimal health is to operate at the highest vibrational level in body, mind and spirit. In this book, you will not only gain understanding of the chakra system and how it correlates to your overall health, but you will also learn fun ways to boost your emotional, physical and spiritual health through heightened awareness, delicious juices, yoga postures and essential oils.
Body
What is your body trying to tell you? Our body sends us messages by means of discomfort and even pain to let us know when something is wrong. Sometimes it is as severe as a heart attack or cancer, whereas other times the body's signals can be more subtle, and can show up as tiredness, lack of motivation or just general sluggishness. You need to listen and be grateful for these signals as they are clues to where changes are needed. Emotional tension builds up in physical tissue and this "dis-ease" can quickly lead to "disease" if we don't heed and heal the body's messages.
Understanding the chakras gives you the power to analyze your health and be your own best doctor. Modern medicine is undoubtedly amazing and saves lives every day. However, the typical western doctor has been trained to see what is wrong in the body and prescribe a pharmaceutical drug or even an operation to alleviate the symptoms. When we listen to the messages of the chakras, we can be proactive in our health through natural means.
Mind
Rather than taking a drug to act as a mask so we don't feel the messages coming from the body (such as Tylenol for a headache or pain pills for a muscle spasm), I urge you to look at the cause of the symptoms. Allowing yourself to feel the pains of the body will help you to understand its messages and how necessary a change is. By openly feeling the pain, we are able to understand what needs to be done to get to the root of it.
Being mindful of your current emotional state is hugely important in recognizing when life is or is not working as it is. Hence, this heightened level of consciousness leads you to recognize when and where you need to make changes before waiting for situations or health to worsen.
Only YOU really know what is going on in your life and therefore your body. It is possible you could be your own best doctor. In this book, you will delve into your own psyche to uncover the causes of physical ailments.
Spirit
Spirituality is getting in contact with that which is the highest essence of the true you. By acting in accordance with your heart and soul, you live with a deeper level of happiness and contentment. You shine from within. This is your impact on the world, as your actions affect everyone around you, just as your energy does when you enter a room.
