Outside the Box If nothing changes nothing changes. How many times have we heard that at meetings? I remember an old-timer telling a newcomer, “The only thing we’re going to ask you to do is to change your whole life.” Anyone who has been around the recovery process for any appreciable time knows the wisdom of this statement. This book is all about making substantive life changes at many levels. Most of what will be offered will not seem dramatic or difficult, but I can assure the reader that absorbing and implementing some or all of these insights and recommendations has a high probability of creating very positive changes to the trajectory of one’s life. A key to viewing and implementing what’s being offered is the willingness to try things outside our current comfort zone. All of what’s offered below are concepts and tools being utilized by numerous people in various recovery communities. Each has shown the potential to assist the individual in achieving a more balanced and serene recovery.

This work offers a compendium of insights as to what is possible for those in recovery in any of the many varied twelve-step programs. Based on over forty years of personal and clinical experience with both addiction treatment and the recovery process in North America, Europe, and Asia, Dr. Griffin provides an expanded context through which to view the recovery process. The presentation is crafted to be accessible to both the newcomer and those with many years of recovery. Through reassessment of traditional tools and exploration of many recent additions to the recovery process, the reader will be introduced to a path, which will lead to experiencing the promises at an ever-increasing depth and level of serenity. Special attention is paid to the most up-to-date tools for the treatment of PTSD, which, for a high percentage of those in recovery, serves as a stumbling block to achieving true freedom of the spirit. The message offered is clear. Contented abstinence, which for many has been all they thought possible in recovery, is really only the beginning. Recovery is clearly an ever-expanding process, and the potential to achieve truly serene recovery is within the grasp for those who have the right information, the right tools, and the willingness to use them effectively.
About the Author
Dr. George E. Griffin is a 1962 graduate of NYU College of Medicine. He is Board Certified in General Surgery and Addiction Medicine and for over 40 years has been actively involved with Addiction treatment in the US, Canada, Europe, and Asia.
Dr. Griffin is a retired, decorated senior officer of the US Navy Medical Corps. He served in Viet Nam and is a qualified Navy Deep Sea Diver, Submarine Medical Officer, and Radiation Health specialist. During his Navy career, Dr. Griffin Commanded hospitals and medical facilities in the US and Japan. He also served as a special assistant to two US Marine Corps Commandants as The Medical Officer, US Marine Corps.
Dr. Griffin lives in Keene, NH with his wife Susan, with whom he shares 7 children, 11 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. Although over 80 he is still an avid weight lifter, yoga practitioner and continues to complete a marathon each year.
