Finally, in 1998 as members of an Elder Treks tour, she and her husband undertook a fantastic adventure traveling challenging roads into regions rarely explored by Westerners. They traveled the ancient Silk Road on the Karakoram Highway, the highest paved road in the world, through Pakistan, Kyrgyztan and northwest China before eventually arriving in Uzbekistan. As a child in Uzbekistan, Irene lived in hardship despite the help of friendly Uzbek Muslims, her return as an adult, wife, mother and grandmother continued her efforts to resolve her feelings about those years and to dedicate herself to the memories of her Mother, Father and Sister. Irene’s strength is her survival.”

About the Author

Born in Warsaw, Irene and her family escaped from the Nazis in 1939 to Soviet Ukraine and later to Uzbekistan. Irene’s memoir chronicles growing up during these troubled times and her life after the war. She tragically lost her parents and little sister. Her teenage sister saved her from illness. Eventually, she spent several years in Uzbekistan and in Polish orphanages before immigrating to Israel where, while in the army, she studied nursing. In 1959, she traveled on a nursing exchange visa to New York where she worked as a surgical nurse. She got married, started a family, moved to Berea, Ohio, and finally settled in Northbrook, Illinois. She is blessed with four children and nine grandchildren. Irene’s wish is peace and justice for all. She continues to dedicate her life to that goal.

In this debut memoir, a woman travels to Central Asia and Eastern Europe to retrace her long-ago escape from the Nazis.

In 1991, Ceder Rogers had the idea to return from the United States to her native Poland and travel the route that her

Jewish family took to elude the Nazis in 1939. In 1998, that aspiration became a reality when she and her husband found

a travel agency that could arrange such a complex voyage. Her plan was to begin in Warsaw, the city of her birth, and

travel through the former Soviet republics to Uzbekistan, where her family moved in 1941 and where she lived until

1946. In the course of detailing the trip, she intersperses autobiographical recollections of her family’s travails. Ceder

Roger’s mother and sister died while hospitalized in Andijan; during her 1998 trip, the author searched the local

cemetery for their graves to no avail. She was only 7 years old when her mother died, and she was eventually separated

from her last remaining sister to live in an Uzbek orphanage, where she remained until she was 11. Then she was sent

back to Poland, and yet another orphanage. At 16, she was sent to Israel, a nation that forever captured her affection:

“Israel is a marvel at present; there is no other country in the world raised from the ashes of war to achieve its present

status as a democratic world leader in the scientific and medical communities,” she writes. Overall, her recollection is an

eclectic one, as it includes a meticulous travelogue of her trip in 1998, a searching history of her family and their

struggles during World War II, and a series of seemingly random reflections on various subjects, such as American

television and the dangers of drugs. The unfocused, meandering nature of the text, combined with its extraordinary

attention to inessential detail, can sometimes be frustrating. The events of the author’s life story, however, are utterly

gripping, and the reminiscences that she experiences when she returns to the scenes of her tumultuous youth are, by

turns, poignantly sad and nostalgic.

"In fairness, I have to preface my review that I have known the Rogers family since 1982. We were thrown together much like all the ""Storms of Life Stories"" chronicled in Irene's book. Even though I grew up in Nazi Germany under the dictatorial regime of Adolf Hitler, where it was mandatory to enter the Hitler Youth Movement at the age of 10 years and Irene grew up as a persecuted Jew in Poland, decades later in the new country we both had chosen as a homeland with citizenship and all that goes with it we bonded immediately. We have been ""like family"" ever since. From that vantage point I can swear to the fact that Irene's dedication and relentless work toward doing good, helping and eradicating unjust behavior by exposing it, being super-active in civic and cultural/religious events that deal with advancement of justice and peace is her way of life every day. I can highly recommend the book, because her life is so unique, so varied, so heart-wrenching yet so uplifting, I say it's a MUST READ, as not enough personal stories of this type actually end up being a book. Irene needed help only with sentence structure or spelling, which is a challenge in the English language. The sentiments expressed and vibrant and truthful and give the reader a feeling of walking with her (or them: Elder-Trek trip with husband Gerald). It was a work of love and dedication to her aim that the Holocaust not be forgotten in order to prevent another one."

What a story? It is about happy and sad adventures -I could not put it down -her family refugees escaped the holocaust -a young girl loses her parents - it is inspirational -I encourage every body to read the book- miriam bloch
