The next day, Chloe ran home from the bus stop. Just as she had promised, her mother gathered her children together and had something waiting for them.
“What is this, Mom? It just looks like a plain old box to me,” Chloe said with disappointment.
“Chloe, this is a very special box. It’s a Magic Family Box!”
“A Magic Family Box? It doesn’t look magic to me!” laughed Chloe. Her brothers and sister looked on, their faces showing they were as confused as Chloe.
Chloe took the box from her mom. She turned it around and around, looking at it closely. It was square and white and empty.
“This Magic Family Box can bring a lot of happiness on Christmas morning,” Mom explained.
“Does it magically fill with toys and candy?” snickered Max. “Can it do that now?”
“Stop being so annoying, Max,” said Chloe. “Toys and candy. That is all you ever think about.”
Turning back to her mother, Chloe said, “Okay, Mom, I give up. What do we do with this box to make it magic?”
“The first thing you need to do,” said Mom, pulling out the craft supplies, “is decorate the box. Everyone can help!”
