Looking back, I cannot even begin to imagine how Gus must had felt being all-alone and hearing this news; how scared he must have been. To this day, it breaks my heart. I just started crying at the time and he tried to minimize the significance to me, telling me that they didn't know anything yet and that this is why he didn't want to tell me, because he didn't want to upset me. They say that you can tell a person's character by how they handle themselves in a time of crisis. Well even in this moment of crisis, Gus put his feelings second to mine.
It was then, that I ran out our front door and looked up into the sky, which yielded a double rainbow. Normally, I would have appreciated the beauty of this rainbow however, not today. Instead, I cursed at it. I thought to myself, How dare you God! How dare you show me something so beautiful on this day of such pain! I felt that God was mocking me with the irony of displaying a rainbow, something so beautiful, at such an ugly time. I wanted it all to go away, the rainbow and the bad news. It was at this time, that I began to resent the presence of a rainbow and saw them only as a reminder to this day; the day of our family’s devastating news. I wanted to go back to yesterday and just feel like a normal family again.

Personally, I see grieving as more than mourning a loss, it is also remembering. Yes, I said it. It is remembering and honoring our loved ones. This is healthy and this is okay. Grieving and remembering are not mutually exclusive; they coexist. You do not need permission from anyone to do this. We should never feel as if we need to defend this to anyone. Quite honestly, there were times when I felt this way and it added more pain onto what I was already experiencing. I prayed about it; I meditated on it and from this I gained inner strength and peace. Peace to remember as I choose and strength to do so without the need of others’ approval. Grieving = Healing = Empowerment

About the Author
Michelle Caravelli, M.Ed., is the widow of Gus and mother to Brittany, Gina, Louie, and Madeline. She spends her day working with young children through teaching and is currently working on organizing grieving support seminars. Originally from La Crosse, Wisconsin, she now lives in Warwick, Rhode Island, with her family and enjoys spending time by the ocean.
