Zearben quenched his fasting with the delight of a few dates
and wild fruits gathered during the day’s wander.
The flat stone he lay on resting his wiry frame
he knew as his mother.
He lay aside the stream of mind
and listened instead to the voice of night,
gazing as much inward as outward
into the Valley of the Shadow of Death.
He knew few men ever cross this valley.
He also knew with a glint of humour
that no man has ever returned from This Great Mountain -
The Mountain Of Wisdom.
These truths did not concern Zearben,
long ago in his youth the mountain called his name.
A lifetime ripened him for this ascent
with decades of toil and contemplation.
For now the sojourner was at peace
listening into the call of night,
knowing that he Is The Mountain.

About the Author
Michael Moon lives with his wife, Jennifer, and his son and story custodian, Zearben. They live in a rustic mud brick cottage in a maze, with a milking goat and wild kangaroos in a sandalwood oasis called Quarraluna, found in the quiet, peaceful drylands of Western Australia.
