Why would you want to love yourself? I will tell you I found it the most difficult thing I have ever done, and also the most empowering. I found accepting who I was the easiest place to start. How do you accept all of you when there are parts and pieces even you have judged as wrong or inappropriate?
It starts with the understanding that in every moment you have done the best you can and it is good enough. We live in a world of relationships. Relationships with ourselves, families, friends, co-workers, fellow students, and within the communities we live in. Each relationship we encounter on any given day is also being affected by outside influences happening around those individuals. We are all interconnected and interacting on varying levels daily. This leads to my point of we do the best we can. We do the best we can when we consider what is happening outside of us and within us.

Most of us have been taught a lie. A lie that says everything which is good and worthwhile is outside of you and you must find it there externally. The lie says that all acceptance, validation, love, approval and joy must be given to you, by someone else and found somewhere else. You are not alone in accepting this lie, the majority of the world population also shares this belief in this lie with you. The lie is, it is not outside of you, or with anyone else, or somewhere else. The truth is all the love, acceptance, validation, approval, and joy is waiting for you within.
You can fulfill you, validating yourself through acceptance, love, approval, and joy, and do not have to look outside yourself for it. An overflowing source is ready for you to tap into. This can empower you, create confidence, the ability to be in any situation, with any type of person, and you will no longer need them to empower you because you were already doing it for yourself. When you do receive love, acceptance, validation, approval, or joy from another, it becomes a sharing experience that is not required to meet a need.
About the Author
My name is Lisa McTavis. I am a Licensed Master Social Worker and I work at an agency as a mental health counselor. The work I do as a counselor is to connect clients back into them and support them in finding their own acceptance and love for themselves. It is my passion. I live in sunny New Mexico and have a 17 year old daughter.
