I was on a journey to nowhere. I found myself at 54 years old driving around the United States with my poodle mix Romeo and everything I owned in my Mazda 3. I was looking for something but I did not know what it was. I wanted to be free. I wanted to feel good. I wanted to be happy. I was hoping to find the state, town, neighborhood, and people that would give me a certain feeling. The feeling that I have arrived, I belonged. The feeling that I fit in somewhere. The feeling that I was connected to other people. It was everything I had hoped to find when I moved to California, but didn’t. I was driving because I could no longer be in the life I had. It was unbearable. I was exhausted from my life and I was tired of acting like everything was fine, it was not fine.

Alina Martin was fifty-four years old when she sold her possessions and embarked on a journey around the United States to escape what had become an unbearable existence devoid of self-worth and self-love.
With only her dog, Romeo, as her companion, Alina details how her desire to feel free and happy fueled her travels from a place of exhaustion and lack of connection to explore the world around her with the hope of finding a place where she finally belonged. Included with her personal stories as well as those gathered from people she encountered while on the road, Alina discloses her memories of an abusive childhood and marriage, long buried in her subconscious, and reveals how facing the pain ultimately set her down a path inward to realize freedom, her true self, inner peace, a greater understanding of all things past and present, and a sense of acceptance and belonging in the world.
The Road to Me is a heartfelt account of a wanderer’s experiences on the road as she bravely faced her painful memories, encountered strangers who inspired her, and found the way to authenticity and self-acceptance.
About the Author
Alina Martin has always known she was on a journey that began when she lived abroad for six years. After working as a teacher and raising two daughters in Virginia, she embarked on an unexpected road trip that changed her life and inspired her to write her first book, The Road to Me. Today, she happily embraces a nomadic existence where she calls no one place home.
