When your mind perceives that you are in a dangerous, unsafe or painful situation, it creates defense mechanisms to protect you. Those defense mechanisms can take many forms. It can take the form of being passive, afraid of confrontation, isolating, aggressive behavior, anger, depression, suicidal ideation or attempts, anxiety, dissociation, panic attacks, nervous breakdowns, agoraphobia, multiple personality disorders, abusing alcohol, prescription medication or drugs. Or it can take the form of being a warrior. It can take the form of someone who is obsessed with helping and saving others. It can take the form of a persona that everyone loves but no one knows. It can take on a persona that was built to protect who you are at your core. It can take a persona that has been carefully crafted to be the opposite of what you feel at your core because you never want to feel those things or be that person anymore. Your mind can also choose to pack those traumas in a box and forget them. It can choose to positive think around them. It can choose to be so busy that there is no time to feel them or notice that they are there. It can choose to put a limit on how much time you need to heal. It can purposefully and thoughtfully choose to create beauty in place of pain and make it your life’s work to help others heal. It can keep you isolated with your defenses up, because even if you don’t recognize it, everyone is a threat to your safety, and allow no one to find out who you truly and deeply are, because if they did, they may not love you anymore. It can take on an armor of strength - because you’ve learned that you cannot afford to feel or emit weakness. Yet, if they came close enough, they would see how often you cry, they would see the pain in your eyes, they would know that you didn’t have it all together. They might be a threat to the carefully crafted façade that your mind and ego have created to keep you sane. And when that sanity is threatened, the mind defends and protects you by any means necessary. If you are not aware or have not dug deep enough, you do things because you have been hard-wired by the self-protective ego. You see, it takes a lot of work to create and manage a persona, and your ego can stay quite busy doing that. It is a full-time job. Protecting yourself and working to keep a person under control or manifesting in a way that your mind has constructed takes effort. It’s as if there is a whole other person at work managing your life – one keeping the mask in place and one stifling the part that is screaming out to heal. It takes an inhuman level of subconscious effort to keep trauma buried. The mind is a beautiful thing, and I thank myself for protecting me, until it was time to let me be free.

We live in a world that teaches us to put on masks from the day we are born. We are taught about labels and are pressured into applying them to everything in our world. We are molded into what we ought to be. Throughout our lives, we encounter multiple traumas - small ones and large ones, and we learn to pack them away because we are taught to be “bosses”, to “soldier on”; and in the event we expose our truths, vulnerability can be perceived as weakness. And so, we show the world what it wants. We deny our traumas and truths until they demand to be seen. Yet, it is when we face the truth of who we really are that we can stand in our power and our light. Being in our divine truth is where we are really tapped into life.

Maimah Karmo is the Founder/CEO of the Tigerlily Foundation and a fourteen-year survivor of breast cancer.
