Preface
"Dance is the movement of the universe concentrated in an individual." — Isadora Duncan
Imagine a dance form so powerful that it harmonizes your life's rhythms with ancient wisdom while naturally enhancing your physical vitality and well-being. Belly dance, with its mesmerizing undulations, rhythmic hip movements, and expressive gestures, is not just an art—it’s a holistic journey that unites body, mind, and spirit.
My journey with belly dance began in the small town of Sturgeon Falls, Northern Ontario, Canada. As a child, I was a sports enthusiast more likely to be found skating or playing volleyball than in a dance studio. Belly dance was practically non-existent. Before discovering belly dance, I led a sedentary lifestyle working for Statistics Canada as a business profiler. At my heaviest, I weighed 215 pounds.
My transformation began when I stumbled upon a book titled The Art of Belly Dance: A Fun and Fabulous Way to Get Fit by Carolena Nericcio. What initially caught my attention was the promise of getting fit while having fun. At that point, I truly had no idea what belly dance really was.
Intrigued by the concept, I followed the instructions in the book and gradually incorporated more resources into my self-taught practice. For a year, I dedicated myself to learning and practicing belly dance on my own. The results were transformative—not only did I discover a new passion, but I also lost 70 pounds in the process.
As a 34-year-old single mother grappling with depression and an eating disorder, belly dancing became an essential therapeutic tool. It significantly enhanced my physical health and revitalized my emotional and spiritual well-being. Each step, each undulation, and each shimmy became a way to connect with my body, emotions, and spirit in ways I had never experienced before.
As I delved deeper into the practice, I realized that belly dance was more than just self-expression; it was a catalyst for personal transformation. I discovered that the dance was activating and balancing my chakras, leading me to a greater sense of wholeness and well-being. This realization fueled my passion for belly dance and its transformative power.
As I continued on this path of self-discovery, belly dance not only helped me heal from my own wounds, but also gave me the tools to help others on their journeys of transformation. This inspired me to open my own dance studio and later develop Feminicity®, dedicated to exploring the transformative benefits of dance.
Belly dance serves as an expansive umbrella sheltering a rich diversity of sacred dances that trace their roots back to ancient times and distant lands. This ancient lineage infuses the dance with a profound sense of connection—to the past, to the divine feminine, and to the elemental forces of nature. When we engage in belly dance, we participate in a living tradition passed down through generations of women.
Through this work, I’ve witnessed countless individuals walk through my studio doors seeking one thing but finding so much more—a deeper connection with themselves and a vibrant, supportive community. These stories of personal transformation have been a constant source of inspiration, fueling my desire to share the sacred dance of belly dance with a wider audience.
