I started to make a list of places that I either currently use stones in my home or have in the past. It went something like this:
o On your desk
o Next to your bed
o Above your headboard
o In the pillowcases on the bed
o On your windowsills
o On bookcases
o In the kitchen next to the stove
o In the kitchen next to the microwave – perfect location for a small Himalayan Salt Lamp (see below)
o In the bathroom sink (a great place for river rocks)
o Near electronics – this is particularly good for a larger Himalayan Salt Lamp (see below)
o At your front door – This is why you see many people with a large geode near the front door. Amethyst is often used here as it is excellent at conducting energies of calm peacefulness. The perfect way to enter any home. A large geode like this also draws people in and they tend to touch it and pick up that good calming energy.
o The list goes on. . .
When you are using stones and crystals in your home or office, you will be choosing stones of the appropriate size and vibrating with the desired intention or energy to shift the energy in the room.
Think about it this way. Have you ever walked into a room and it just felt good? You probably found yourself looking for a reason to linger there. You may have even looked for reasons to return. If anyone had asked you why you liked it so much, you would probably respond with something like, “I don’t know. It just felt good.”
Conversely, have you ever walked into a room and it just felt off? You immediately felt uncomfortable for no apparent reason. You probably found yourself looking for any excuse to get out of there as quickly as possible. You may even find any excuse possible to avoid going back there. If someone asked you why, you would respond with something like, “I don’t know. It just feels off/wrong/weird.”

Now before you start running away, stop for a second and think about this. An altar is simply a space set aside for sacred time. It does not have to be elaborate. It doesn’t even have to be permanent. It is whatever you make it. . .
Altars can be large or small. They can be permanent or temporary. I create travel altars for people so while they are on vacation or a business trip they can still set aside time and space to connect to their center. If you are uncomfortable with the idea of creating a permanent altar space in your home or office, you can place all of your altar building elements into a special box or on a shelf, then when you are ready to take time for prayer and meditation, you take out your items and set up your altar. Another idea is to set the altar up on a tray on a shelf. Then when you are ready to take sacred time for yourself, you just have to bring the tray out without setting anything up.
The point isn’t how you do it. It is that you do it. While I can’t tell you what your altar looks like, I can offer some suggestions for great ways to utilize stones and crystals in creating sacred space.
