It seems that no matter where we are on our timeline of healing, or life after loss, signals remain a big part of the journey. Sometimes months or even years go by and it feels like our loved one left us. But then all of a sudden, out of the blue, we see something extraordinary and our thoughts are immediately brought to them. That is because they are still very much involved in our life. Learning to trust this to be so can be interrupted by doubt.
When Will died, I marveled at the dream visits he blessed me with. Though, they were bittersweet – he was there and I was here upon waking – they were my most cherished form of connection. This caused me to explain away and sometimes shrug off physical signals.
Over the years, signs seemed to come in waves. There’d be many in one day, and then there’d be no sightings whatsoever for weeks, making me feel as if he left for good. I believed the soul can be anywhere it chose to be, but part of me, the grieving side, led me to doubt this. My poor husband had to work overtime to let me know he hadn’t gone anywhere. Signs had to be so significant, or I’d explain them away…
…The journey of healing has taken me through many hills of excitement and hope, and valleys of gloom and despair. But, I try to remind myself that even in life prior to loss, I endured ups and downs. Who on this planet hasn’t? But as time continues to pass, I’m realizing that our loved ones, though not in the body we recognize, never leave us. They remain an active part of our world, sharing in delightful events and ceremonies. Oftentimes, they’re silently holding our hand when we need it the most. Sending us signs, so we’ll remember we haven’t been forgotten and abandoned.
Understanding that I’m not alone enables me to take those daring baby steps forward, to the best of my ability, proving to myself and Will, that I can do this. In the meantime, I continue to believe that Will is with me when he needs to be. That’s what love is, and it is expressed through various signs, given as gifts to prove that they are here…and want to be.
