Poli`ahu and Pele have been archrivals for hundreds of years since the time they arrived on the island of Hawai`i. Pele, the fierce volcano goddess, commands the hot lava to sprout up from deep inside the Earth and then creates new land with the flow of hot lava, often into the ocean floor. No one can distract Pele when she is so entranced by her work as she swirls around and spreads her arms to move the thick lava across the land. There is great respect among people for her power of creation.
Poli`ahu, the elegant snow goddess, also works hard to preserve the beauty of the tall, snow-capped mountain of Mauna Kea, protecting the snow and the precious water created from snow melting into the lake and streams. Poli`ahu is particularly fond of the `ulu grove where tall, green breadfruit trees grow to produce delicious food for the people of the island. Poli`ahu cannot think of a more scrumptious food than freshly baked breadfruit, and no meal can be complete without it! Poli`ahu always keeps her eyes on the `ulu grove to make sure the breadfruit trees are safe and flourishing.
Even though they have been archrivals, Poli`ahu and Pele have become best friends over the years they have lived on the island together. Earlier this morning Poli`ahu invited Pele to her house, where they sat together on the balcony to share freshly baked breadfruit and a refreshing drink of morning dew, melted from last night’s fresh snowflakes.

This spectacular story was born from a pleasant afternoon’s dream while visiting the Hualālai region of the Big Island, Hawai`i. It is beautifully illustrated in full color to enhance the reader’s imagination.
An audio book version of this story is created specifically to complement the printed book and promote the Hawaiˋian tradition of storytelling. Wonderfully narrated by Teri Manawale`a Corpuz, the audio book reminds us of those breezy summer evenings under the starry night sky, when we gathered at the knees of our mothers and grandmothers to hear mystical stories of a far away land.
