Waiter/Waitress
-noun
A person, man or woman, who waits on tables, as in a restaurant.
Connoisseur of Cool
Greeting guests as they enter my establishment, I emit confidence and charm. Encased in an ensemble of suave I accompany them to their table and proceed with my theatrical greeting and welcome show. While introducing myself and entertaining them with my small talk and menu recommendations, I add a personal touch to each of my performances with my keen eye and ear. Procuring my guests orders, I impress them by using nothing but my memory as a means to recount their orders. While some may flake this off as a natural ability, only the truly appreciative know this is a learned talent I’ve refined through my years in industry.
Delivering each of my guest’s meals to them without even asking who had what, they are silently impressed by my immense attention to detail. I pride myself on bestowing upon them the smoothest of dining experiences possible, never letting them want for anything. Their drinks are never empty, yet they have never asked for them to be refilled. Having finished their entrées, their mains are presented to them without the slightest feeling of hunger incurred. I possess timing and the ability to deliver before a question is asked, leaving just the right amount of time between each act. Seamlessly each act flows on to the other as I continue to build rapport between my guests and myself, forging a personal memory they can tie to their dining experience.
Nothing is too much trouble, allowing each one of my guest’s personal requests to be voiced, noted, and then acted upon. Any questions about the menu are met with strong recommendations; I compliment great dish selections and suggest wonderful accompaniments. My knowledge far surpasses the food menu as I can personally testify for the wine menu and suitable beverage choices. Exuding confidence, guests feel they can ask me any question and receive a witty and concise response. They seek my attention and are envious when I leave their table to serve another.
Serving multiple tables at any given time, I’m able to differentiate incoming information and systematically categorize it for each set of guests. I process information promptly and respond to it accordingly. Hidden by my unflustered exterior is the effort I draw upon to make my job look, ironically, effortless. Ultimately I take joy in providing people with a stellar service accompanied by fantastic food. Guests convey their appreciation to me directly through their verbal thanks and indirectly through their gratuity. While this is welcomed and appreciated, essentially I continue to do what I do because I love to perform and interact with people.
Road Worker
-noun
A person who works, as in construction or repairs on a road.
Transportation Visionary
As hardened as the asphalt that belies under foot, my primary objective is to uphold the integrity of the road network that enables people to travel the country. With a range of vehicles using the roads we construct and maintain, these thoroughfares are in constant use, and demand for their conservation is unyielding. Privy to the intended plans for the future expansion of the road network, I give these plans life by upholding my individual responsibilities. I am one of a select few who have had the honor bestowed upon them to unite communities across the land via the establishment of bitumen roadways.
Giving birth to new roads, a staged approach is implemented as I prepare roads’ intended passage. Scraping back and leveling the existing rugged terrain, I then embed the necessary drain networks to ensure longevity and optimal function. Reinforcing the earth below, I compact it with machines of magnitude capable of fusing the crushed rock to the earth. The bitumen is the smooth final layer that I produce to ensure seamless driving, yet it’s the dense matrix below that allows for safe passage and supports the weight the road must bear. With my roads in continual use, I am bound by procedure to ensure maximum quality of life in the roads that benefit motorists.
As competently as I undertake each new project, repair, maintenance and alterations go with the territory. Regardless of how well a road has been constructed, at some point restoration will be needed. When that time comes, I am there without question. During maintenance, mundane routine can discourage and entice those of lesser mental strength to not apply themselves, but not I. I am forever conscious of the importance of every role delegated to me and where it sits in the grander scheme of the situation. Committed to excellence and providing a smooth driving experience, whether it be holding a stop sign or shoveling dirt, I am all but too prepared to get my hands dirty and reinstate stability and security to our transit reticulum.
Expressway, freeway, speedway, thoroughfare, wherever you find yourself there is a type road that got you there. Perpetually broadening the lengths and reaches of our road system, I tirelessly press on. Connecting the most isolated places to the road network is my ultimate ambition. All roads connect with each other, no matter how direct or indirect the route. Their capabilities are endless; being able to with-stand the most volatile of environments and reach as far as one can build before met by sea. I vow to sustain the quality of the intricate road web and while humanity continues to use them, I remain firmly fastened to my word.
