Becoming the Healer

In January 2003, what began as a normal daily commute to take two children to school turned into an eight-year journey of miraculous recovery and transformation. This book tells the story of Deborah’s accident on that fateful morning, detailing both the effects of the accident as well as the impact upon her and her family. Deborah’s story covers both the personal side of her injuries (her feelings, experiences, difficulties, and triumphs), as well as documenting the medical community’s reactions to her injuries and their recommended treatments. Deborah discusses her major injury, traumatic brain injury or TBI, in both personal and non-technical medical terms, documenting her journey to recover from this frequently misdiagnosed injury.

t the time of the accident, Deborah was the mother of five children, with the younger two still in high school. She was active in her church and community, teaching Sunday school and volunteering at a local hospital. She was also a successful small business owner and entrepreneur with an expanding personal business set to blossom following the children’s graduation in the coming summer. The accident, and resulting brain injury, left this vibrant, outgoing, active individual with no short-term memory, confused, easily startled, in constant extreme pain, and with ultra-sensitivity to light, sound, colors, and shapes.

The story of Deborah’s journey to recovery, begun in 2003 and to some degree still continuing today, is both informative and inspirational. Informative in that Deborah explains how she experienced her injury, along with information, references, recommendations, and insight into many non-traditional and non-drug-related treatments that aided her recovery. Inspirational in that Deborah tells her story from the point of view of one who suffered the debilitating effects of this often-tragic injury and has not only recovered but has learned to help others achieve their own recovery.
