Chapter 18
Your MAPS: A Thrive-All Kit
Many say that we need a survival kit to be prepared for a big disaster such as an earthquake, a hurricane, a terrorist attack, or any other serious emergency.
I think we need a “thrive-all” kit. Something to help us not only survive, but also thrive in any and all conditions and circumstances. Not just for the big challenges, but also for the everyday challenges we face on an ongoing basis.
Staying confident in these constantly changing times and maintaining our self-esteem through job loss, criticism, or rejection is challenging. It is a constant vigil to turn negative or limiting thoughts and feelings into more positive ones and to overcome the self-talk that debilitates and discourages us. It requires continual determination to stay focused and on course to our dreams and desires and to turn our so-called failures into successes, our doubt into optimism, our confusion into clarity.
The MAPS to the present moment that you have identified, discovered, and created are the very things that make up your personal thrive-all kit. Here is everything you need to stay motivated and empowered to make changes in yourself, to stay strong and inspired to take positive action, and to feel and be the best that you can be.
Whenever a challenge, disaster, crisis, or upset comes, you have what you need to thrive in any condition, circumstance, or situation. You have what you need to maintain a positive attitude and be empowered to move through any difficulty in the most positive way.
We all want more than just to survive something; we want to be able to thrive in any and all conditions. I don’t consider myself a cancer survivor, but a thriver. To survive means to live or exist beyond death or an occurrence, while to thrive means to be successful, to grow with vigor, to flourish. The more you know, the more you grow. The more you are prepared, the better you can handle anything that happens and the better you become from each experience.
I remember the day the doctor told me I had breast cancer. He said, “The most important thing you must do is get a team together. More than anything, a team is what you will need to get through this.” He was right. I put together a team of family and friends whom I knew would be there for me and not let me wallow in fear, who would hold a vision of me healthy and strong. These dear ones would motivate and empower me to move forward. They were and still are incredible MAPS when I really need them. I spent time in places that were points of power for me, and I put myself in positive, uplifting situations. I surrounded myself with inspiring books, music, and people.
I made many, many new MAPS and I constantly referred to the ones I already had. I connected with anything and everything that motivated and empowered me, recognized the many blessings in my life every day, and found myself supporting and encouraging others as I recovered. I created a thrive-all kit that continues to grow and expand. These MAPS always help me find my way to a better place inside me.
Your thrive-all kit should contain everything that is a motivation and power source for you. Carry these MAPS with you; have them around you at home, on your smartphone, in your workplace, on your computer, in your car—wherever they can be available to help you when you need them. Use them to think your best thoughts, to feel your best, to make the best choices and decisions, to set clear intentions, and to fuel your willpower to take the best action and have the best life you can.
Along everyone’s road in life, there are peaks and valleys, highways and potholes, smooth sailing and construction zones. Use your MAPS as your own personal GPS to help navigate the terrain. Let your motivation and power sources make traveling easier and guide your way. Enjoy the journey.
We all have challenges; we all get distracted and pulled out of the present. Sometimes we unconsciously eat more than is necessary for our health or well-being, or watch too much television, or get stuck on the cell phone or the computer, or drift into past or future thinking, or get caught up in current problems, dramas, etc.
So much pulls us out of the conscious now. It takes a lot to stay focused and positive. My prayer is that what is offered in this little guidebook will help you in some way and each day to find your way to the peace and presence of love in you and all around you.
Boundless blessings.
