I thought my dad died a terrible death with onset of diabetes. First he had a toe amputated, then his leg at the knee, then the other leg, and ended up legally blind. It was my job to roll his wheelchair into a bathroom that was put in for him by one of his sons-in-law. I would take him in, help him with his pants, and then transfer him from the chair onto the toilet. This must have been so hard for this man that was so active and self-sufficient even throughout his senior years with gardening and other work around the house. I often wonder now how I would be if inflicted with a disease that stopped me from playing tennis, running, and biking and all the things that make life enjoyable for me. Although I use my mind for work, I rely so much on my body for exercise and fun outdoor activities. It is said however that the mind and body are one. Every part of our body has intelligence and is connected to thoughtful decision making. It’s this universal consciousness that can help heal ourselves with meditation and other forms of self-awareness.

About the Author
Dr. Thomas A. Viviano received his Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University in Workforce Education, his Master’s from Chestnut Hill College in Applied Educational Technology, and his Bachelor’s degree from Temple University in education. He has authored and co-authored many educational articles on career and technical education and works as an executive director in a career and technical center. Dr. Viviano’s life story exemplifies an educational rags-to-riches story, as he came from a predominantly educationally disadvantaged environment. Dr. Viviano resides in Lehighton, Pennsylvania, and is a father of three wonderful adult children.
