Chapter 4 – What can you do?
“… there is no cure and no improving of the world that does
not begin with the individual himself ... ”
What can you do? In a conflicted world …
Ok. So, you are one human being in a planet of over 6 billion. You may not think that you could clear up all the bad stuff in this world, but yet, why not? Praying for World Peace and thinking about it every day I believe can have a powerful effect on the global consciousness, not to mention on you! But even without doing this, we can certainly communicate thoughts of light and love to all those around us. Regardless of external forces, we can work on the betterment of our own humanity. If we all learnt to do this, you begin to see how achievable global healing could be. The most crucial thing to know is that everything you do affects the world around you. Every bug you tread on, every blade of grass you squash; it all has an effect on your external environment. Think about every smile you give or every smile you receive, or every time you’re pissed off and probably quashed many a stranger. Everything you do has an effect.
One person can make a difference and one person always does.
If you care about humanity you can make a huge difference just by talking about it; every discussion raises awareness and you don’t know how far that could reach. Be willing to look into world affairs and try to distinguish propaganda from underlying truths. We have way too many people in the capitalist countries ignoring the reality of suffering in our world. But to deny the reality of human/earth suffering is the most disastrous choice of all. Why? Because to deny the existence of a fellow human’s rights pretty much denies you of your heart. And to deny the hurt of our planet pretty much
vanquishes it too.
I have attempted to make clear some of these issues in the preceding chapters. There is much apathy in Australia though things are starting to move and I pray will continue to move in a more humane direction. To understand how to be humane one has only to ask oneself what they would expect others to do if their own rights were being violated.
We must make others aware of their own humanity. If
we want to be cared for, we have to care for others.
The importance of humanity has been discussed throughout the ages. Socrates states, as written in Plato’s The Republic:
So it wasn’t a wise man who said that justice is to
give every man his due, if what he meant by it was
that the just man should harm his enemies and help
his friends. This simply is not true: for as we have
seen, it is never right to harm anyone at any time.
Imagine if all people could understand this. Imagine if all people were loved and able to love. Imagine how magnificent a world could be, if every single living soul was committed to healing themselves and the world. Imagine if creating World Peace was the goal of All
People. Imagine if overcoming our own struggles, our own conditioning, is all that is needed to demonstrate and prove that every other human being can do this if given the chance. There are many stories of our fellow humans who have overcome great difficulties when the odds were against them. It’s time for us to overcome our own.
Yet it is obvious that our government wants you to fall for the capitalist way of life. Mainly they want you to work very hard and to buy and consume a lot so that the rich can just keep on getting richer. Remember, the masses collectively make millionaires, billionaires—just think how much profit is made when one product sold to millions of people has a price rise of 5¢ (which happens
a lot more than inflation dictates). It is the wealthy humans in power that decide what’s on our TV and in our newspapers (you may know them as Murdoch and Packer). We all need to be taught the skills of reading between the lines.
We need people, just like you, to believe in humanity with all your heart and soul, and recognise that just by being a loving person you are helping the world right now.
“We may even find the solution to hunger and disease
We can bomb the world to pieces, but we can’t bomb it into peace”
