At the core of all of this is a deep understanding that the only path on the journey from grief to joy is indeed through grief, and an equally deep trust it is possible to get to the other side. The path may not be pristine and well-trimmed with light shining down, illuminating the way. There are areas of thick, dark, mud – quicksand-like in that they seem able to swallow us whole if we just stand one second too long or take a step in the wrong direction.
It’s no wonder so many of us are reluctant to tread this path. Nor are we usually encouraged to do so either. Well-meaning friends and relatives will tell us to “keep busy,” to not venture too fully into our grief. Even those who acknowledge we need to go there, we often find calling out to us impatiently, figuratively tapping their foot or wristwatch, warning us - subtly or not - that time is up. It is no longer beneficial for us to walk this path…Correction. They feel it is no longer beneficial for us to walk this path.
Grief takes what it takes. It takes the tears. It takes the days, weeks, months even, of feeling spaced out, unable to connect with life at all.
